Gary J. Raby, Sr.
Apr 19, 1953 - Jan 20, 2017
The LPAA is sad to announce the passing of one our original LPAA Board of Directors, Gary Raby. Gary, age 63 of Lewiston, died on Friday, January 20, 2017 in Niagara Hospice House after a lengthy illness.
He was a 1971 Lewiston-Porter graduate and a 1976 graduate of Niagara University with a Bachelor's in Physical Education. Gary is best known around the Lew-Port Campus as "the High Five Coach." He had coached the Cross Country and Track Teams for many years. Gary was the chief organizer for the LPAA's main fund raising event, The Jason Raby 5K Race, which was a memorium for his late son, Jason.
Paul Casseri, Superintendent of Schools and LPAA BOD member, shared his thoughts about Gary, "Gary was an awesome guy. He has touched the lives of so many young people through his gentle demeanor and his ebullient approach to life. The LPAA BOD all had the great opportunity to work very closely with him on the Jason Raby Memorial Run. Gary would always say at the end of the day it was always about family. To Gary, I say your whole Lew-Port family has you and your family in our thoughts and prayers."January 09, 2017
Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association Active in Community
The Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association (LPAA) has quite the following across the Niagara region. With 17 Board Members on the roster and many active alumni who coordinate and support community events, the LPAA continues to enrich the lives of their classmates on a social level while helping the Lewiston-Porter Central School District on a fiscal level.
LPAA President, Bruce Newton ’65, and Vice President, Edward Engel ’58, are leading the charge and working diligently to engage with alumni from all classes. In addition to maintaining the LPAA Facebook page and website, this duo, along with 15 other Board Members are also responsible for coordinating reunions, Distinguished Alumni awards, maintaining class rosters, and hosting fundraisers that benefit Mini Grants and scholarships for Lewiston-Porter faculty and students.
This past summer was a busy one for the LPAA. They hosted the Annual Jason Raby Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk held in August 2016 and the Lewiston-Porter Class of 1966 50th Reunion, “Back Together Again” in September. The race saw over 120 participants cross the finish line and the Lewiston-Porter alumni weekend reunited many graduates who reconnected at a co-ed golf outing, homecoming class social mixer, Niagara Jet Adventure, Rainbow Air helicopter rides over Niagara Falls, and a dinner at the Youngstown Yacht Club.
In addition to maintaining a strong fellowship within the Lewiston-Porter alumni circle, the LPAA is “aiming higher” and working tirelessly to give back to students within the District. Proceeds from benefits like the Annual Jason Raby Memorial 5K Run help to support current Lewiston-Porter students. Along with the forward-thinking central District Office, dedicated teachers and staff, and a plethora of extra-curricular activities, the LPAA helps to supplement the enrichment of students.
The past fall, the LPAA awarded ten Mini Grants to Lewiston-Porter teachers totaling $4,222.00 in aid. Mini Grants are given to faculty and staff who plan to implement unique projects, programs, and resources within their classes, school-related activities, and clubs. These grants provide creative and innovative opportunities for students, which may not otherwise be funded.
Buffalo Business First ranked Lewiston-Porter as the overall number 9 top-rated school district out of the 96 districts across Western New York in June 2016. Lewiston-Porter also made the Honor Roll of WNY outstanding school systems. The LPAA is proud of the ranking which their alma mater achieved. They are also delighted to play a role in giving students and teachers access to additional learning opportunities through Mini Grants and scholarships, bridging community involvement and student success. They hope their efforts played a role in the notoriety the District received.
If you are interested in assisting the LPAA, making a donation, or re-connecting with classmates, please visit the Lewiston-Porter Alumni website at www.lew-port.com/alumni and click the “Join the LPAA” link. The more Lewiston-Porter alumni involved, the more scholarships and grants they are able to fund.November 15, 2016Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association Announces 2016 Mini Grant Recipients
The Lewiston-Porter Alumni Association (LPAA) is 17 Board Members strong and growing. The arm of this organization reaches far across the District and throughout the Lewiston-Porter Community. In addition to remaining in contact with their classmates through reunions, community events, and social gatherings, the LPAA is “aiming higher” and works tirelessly to give back to students within the District.
In November 2016, the LPAA awarded ten Mini Grants to Lew-Port teachers totaling $4,222.00 in aid. Mini Grants are given to faculty and staff who plan to implement unique projects, programs, or resources within their classes, school-related activities, and clubs. These grants provide creative and innovative opportunities for students that may not otherwise be funded.
The following teachers and their projects were awarded for the 2016-2017 school year:
“Flexible Seating” by Kristen Maggi
“Flexible Seating” by Angela Van Egmond
“Close Reading” by Maryann Parker
“RTI-Reading Response to Intervention” by Michelle Broughman
“Learn to Learn with Legos” by Laree DeFranco
“Promoting Middle School” Musicals by Susan Gentile and Jacey Dietz
“Stem Resources” by Colleen Duffy
“Chemistry Curriculum Enhancement” by Michelle Hinchliffe
“Getting Close Up with Macro Photography” by Carrie Popielski
“Art Display Materials” by Brett Coppins and the Art Department
Grant recipients, Susan Gentile, Middle School Secretary, along with Middle School Drama and Musical Director, Jacey Diez, applied for and received a $500 Mini Grant for the Middle School Theater Program. Gentile applied when she noticed the audio equipment for the Middle School play was out of date. “You couldn't hear the students speak. All their hard work and all the words and jokes were half-caught.” With the $500, Gentile and Diez joyfully purchased wireless microphones to be used in future Middle School productions. Diez expresses, “We are very excited about this new grant from the Alumni Association. With this new grant for microphones at the Middle School, we intend to hold various fundraisers on its stage throughout this spring and into next year to support the restoration of the Middle School Theater Program, including bake sales, a Drama Club Cabaret Night, and a new event for next year: ‘The Middle School's Lancer Talent Show 2017.’”
Mini Grants are made possible through fundraising efforts of the LPAA. They are certainly appreciated by the recipients and students who utilize the new tools and resources. If you are interested in assisting the LPAA or in making a donation, please click the “Join the LPAA” link. You can also view the other programs they support.
