- Leadership Program/ Safety Patrol

At the Intermediate Education Center we offer a leadership program to all 5th graders. The advisors for this program are
Jill Jaruszewski and Karen Yager. The program is supported and encouraged by the AAA School Safety Patrol Officers in New York State. It allows schools to offer this opportunity to 5th graders who are looking to learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety, however it has evolved into much more at Lewiston-Porter. Our 5th graders are trained to look out for safety situations always when out on the bus loop helping children, but our mission is to grow as a leader and role model all around. We focus heavily on leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character building opportunities. Their expectations include following the Safety Patrol Membership Pledge, setting good examples for other students, attending any necessary meetings, reporting to duty on time and prepared, and being a leader as a learner within the classroom. We begin the process of educating our 5th graders on this yearly opportunity in September. Training begins in October and throughout the year we are checking in with our leaders, speaking to their teachers and families when necessary, and scheduling them for their rotations. Finally, at the end of the year we celebrate and honor each of our 5th grade safety patrol leaders. It is a great way to leave the IEC and begin the journey into middle school.
