Mission
-
Lewiston-Porter Physical Education will provide an activity based program while teaching lifelong fitness in a safe and enjoyable environment. Physical education lessons will empower students to be respectful, responsible, and resourceful.
SPARK P.E.
-
SPARK is a cutting-edge and research-based, comprehensive P.E. program. SPARK strives to improve the health of children by disseminating Physical Education, After School, Early Childhood, and Coordinated School Health programs to teachers serving Pre-K through 12th grade students.
Through the PEP Grant, all P.E. teachers at Lew-Port received a coordinated package of highly active curriculum, on-site staff development, extensive follow-up support, and expert selected, content-matched equipment. It is a program that has proven to be extremely effective in instilling an active and healthy lifestyle in children and we are lucky to have this resource at Lewiston-Porter.
Technology in P.E.
-
Through PEP Grant funding, our department has been able to boost our use of technology in P.E. At the primary level, this has been highlighted by our Pro-Trainer walls and Polar Activity watches.
Pro-Trainer Walls
The PEC has 2 units (4 walls) of SMARTfit Pro-Trainer Walls. These are LED Target walls that can be incorporated to enhance almost any P.E. unit. The walls feature alphanumeric targets displaying colors, numbers, letters or symbols, which drive cognitive games such as Chase the Alphabet forward and backward, Find Smiley, Tackle the Number Sequence, Counting Forward and Backward, Lights Out Race, Memory, Action Math, and Symbols and Shapes triggered by striking them with a hand, foot, ball, bat, bean bag, or hand weight, creating a unique and highly stimulating environment for producing rapid training in cognitive speed, neurological and physical fitness.
Polar Active WatchesThrough the PEP Grant, we have obtained several sets of Polar Active watches that classes will have an opportunity to wear periodically throughout the year to track their daily activity. The Polar Active watch is for students of all ages wanting to improve their health and fitness by measuring the impact of their daily activities. The watch is water-resistant and is perfect for measuring students’ activity levels and tracking their progress. Steps, calories and time spent in activity zone are logged in the activity diary on the watch. PEC students really love wearing these watches and filling up their 60 minutes of daily activity!
PEC Traverse Wall
-
Through our PEP Grant funding, we were able to purchase traverse walls at both the IEC and PEC. These walls allow students to traverse horizontally across the wall using upper, lower, and core body strength. Their feet are never more than a few feet off the ground, so no ropes or harnesses are needed.Color-coded rocks allow students to challenge themselves at all levels as they make their way across the wall. These walls are a fun way to get a full body workout and develop self-confidence! The walls also come with magnetic letters, which the P.E. staff use to reinforce target words and literacy throughout all disciplines through collaboration with classroom teachers. All students must pass a basic safety course taught by our P.E. staff.
