Finding Information About Local Offenders

  • There are 3 ways to get information about registered sex offenders in New York State:

    1. Call the Sex Offender Registry at 1-800-262-3257. You will need the person’s first and last name and one of the following: an exact address
with apartment number, city, state and zip code, a complete date of birth, a driver’s license number, or a social security number.
      1. If the risk level has not been assigned (pending), you will only be told that the person is a registered sex offender.
      2. If the risk level is 1 (low) or 2 (medium) you will be able to get information about the offender, the crime committed, terms of
parole or probation, and the offender’s zip code.
      3. If the risk level is 3 (high) you will be able to get the above information plus the offender’s exact address.

    2. Go to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website to search for most level 2 and level 3 offenders by name, county, or zip code. The Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) only allows information on level 2 and 3 offenders that are not pending to be posted on the website. Level 1 offender information can be obtained by calling the 800 number above or by contacting your local police mentioned below.

    3. The local law enforcement agency where the offender currently lives or goes to school can release information to “entities with vulnerable populations
related to the nature of the offense”. Law enforcement may release the same information that is available via the 800 number for Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 offenders.

Please note: The laws regarding the Sex Offender Registry are frequently updated. Visit the DCJS website for the most up-to-date information and to learn more about the New York State Office of Sex Offender Management.
